  • Suffolk County Council
  • Address: Endeavour House, Ipswich IP1 2BX or Phoenix House, Ipswich IP1 5NP – Hybrid working
  • Salary: £40,777-£47,054 per annum (pro rata for part time)
  • Hours: 37 hours per week – flexible working options available
  • Contract: Permanent

Suffolk County Council is different. We’re a modern, flexible, and forward-thinking organisation that’s constantly evolving to meet the changing needs of our communities. As an ITS (Intelligent Transport System) Engineer with us, you’ll enjoy a dynamic work environment where your ideas are valued, your potential is nurtured, and your work makes a tangible difference. Innovation is at the heart of everything we do at Suffolk County Council. If you’re passionate about finding new solutions to complex transport and budget challenges, we want to hear from you.

Your role and responsibilities

Your days will be varied and busy. One day you will be working with contractors to plan a years’ worth of capital maintenance work; the next visiting site to inspect and sign off a new signalised junction; followed by a day working with County Councillors and the public to solve a transport problem they have; and then maybe a day designing a signal installation for a large housing developer.

Your key responsibilities will be

  • Provide day-to-day operational management of the highway network in collaboration with other ITS engineers and team members.
  • Monitor and manage ITS equipment.
  • Carry out traffic signal design for the ITS capital maintenance plan, Suffolk Highways projects, and third-party developers.
  • Review, analyse and refine the operational effectiveness of traffic signal installations.
  • Provide design input for proposed future transport schemes managed by others, delivering engineering designs and project management for ITS team schemes.
  • Work with the Term Maintenance Contractor’s staff and associated consultants and designers to deliver ITS-related works.
  • Sign off and accept ITS infrastructure on the highway.

You will need

Our ideal candidate has the following skills

  • Strong project management and organisational skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to work independently and lead cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in CAD and other relevant software tools.
  • Strong financial management and budgeting skills for capital maintenance planning.

However, if you need help improving your skills in any of these areas, we are happy to help the right candidate with training and further learning. We consider willingness to learn as one of the most important traits of any candidate.

You can view a full list of requirements in the Job and Person Profile (Word). If you believe you can succeed in this role, apply. Even if you don’t meet all requirements, still apply. We would appreciate the opportunity to consider your application.

The team

  • Our team manages the ITS asset in Suffolk. We are a smaller team than you will find doing this in most counties. This means we are always busy, but also that your work will really count and your decisions in the role will always have tangible effects on the day to day lives of people in Suffolk.
  • We have a one team approach with our contractors. We value great working relationships within this team. We celebrate milestones with a curry night, and our Christmas get togethers are always fun!
  • We tend to practise hybrid working. This means that you will be working from an SCC office in Ipswich, our contractor’s office in Needham Market, out on site, and have the ability to work from home for some of your week. Our team members work independently and organise a lot of their own schedule to complete their tasks, however we still talk daily and all meet up weekly.

Empowering Everyone

We’re big believers in potential, possibility and the power of different ideas. We’re always searching for ways to encourage, respect and enable everyone to be the best they can be. We want to represent the diverse communities we serve. We welcome applications from all individuals, especially those from groups that are currently underrepresented in the organisation, as shown in our Workforce Equality Report.
