Your New Organisation

Southend on Sea City Council is a Unitary local authority, providing vital services to meet the needs of the local community. We employ around 1,800 staff who are working alongside our partners and local communities to deliver the city vision and make lives better for the people of Southend.

Working for Southend on Sea City Council offers a challenging and rewarding career in local government within a collaborative and innovate environment, with the benefit of flexible working practices to support a positive work life balance. As a Unitary Authority we are responsible for all local government functions ranging from social services, transport, public health and parks through to planning, trading standards, community safety and education, so we offer a wide range of career opportunities. The diversity of our economy and communities and investment in a number of exciting regeneration projects makes our Council a great place to work, learn and make a difference.

Your new role

We are seeking two full‑time, permanent Educational Psychologists to join our team. This role is offered on a hybrid working basis, blend of working from home and office.

As part of Southend’s Education, Inclusion and Early Years Directorate, you will play a key role in delivering an integrated service that champions inclusive practice for all children and young people. You will also contribute to the promotion of positive mental health and wellbeing across our community. We are particularly interested in applicants with a passion for youth justice, post‑16 development, or social care partnership work, as these areas will shape future service development projects.

The role involves undertaking statutory assessments and implementing preventative strategies. This includes delivering a range of psychological assessments, providing training to key adults, facilitating group work, and working collaboratively within multi‑agency networks. Through these approaches, you will help children and young people to achieve strong academic progress and meaningful social development—supporting them to reach their full potential.

By offering high‑quality advice, support, guidance, and training to children and young people, their families, and educational settings, you will help us to maximise educational attainment, promote personal growth, and ensure our most vulnerable learners are supported to live their best lives.

What you’ll need to succeed

Candidates must hold a professional post graduate qualification in Educational Psychology or equivalent recognised by the British Psychological Society and active registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Eligibility for Chartered Status and Associate Fellowship of the BPS. This role requires an enhanced DBS check.

The council would welcome applications from trainee Educational Psychologists who are in their final year of training.

What you’ll get in return

When joining the council, you can enjoy a range of benefits including: 25 days annual leave, flexible working and excellent training and development opportunities. They are committed to ensuring that you are supported in this varied and challenging role with the appropriate level of training. A full list of benefits provided by Southend Council can be viewed on the “Why Work For Us?” tab.

Competitive salary plus up to 3 SPA points. Previously awarded SPA points will be honoured. (3-8 £47,688- £57,954 plus up to 3 SPA point £63,394 ).
