Change the Script Campaign

Social Work England has started a campaign urging the entertainment industry to alter the narrative of the stories it tells to more realistically and positively mirror the realities of social work. The Change the Script campaign comes in the wake of research conducted by YouGov on behalf of Social Work England, which underscores societal perceptions of social work and those held by social workers themselves.

The campaign was created to raise awareness of the consequences that negative depictions of social workers have on society and to urge TV and filmmakers for more accurate portrayals of social workers and the positive impact they have on people’s lives.

The recurring theme of negativity surrounding social workers within television and film is prominent. Frequently, social workers are depicted in roles that may appear intrusive and neglectful, fostering perceived adverse outcomes for the individuals under their care. These portrayals are often inaccurate, and many social workers contend that such storylines exacerbate the recruitment and retention challenges within the profession.

The professional standards for social workers underscore the significance and diversity of social work practice, as well as the positive influence it exerts on the lives, families, and communities it serves.

Change the Script campaign seeks to heighten awareness regarding the societal repercussions of negative representations of social workers and endeavours to convey the authentic narrative of social work, aiming to reshape perceptions of the profession.
