As we mark Black History Month this year, I am delighted to be part of a programme of conversations, learning and reflection centred on the theme “Honouring Our Communities,” which is not only about recognising the past, but also about shaping a future where everyone belongs.
Black History Month provides an important opportunity to celebrate the rich histories, cultures, achievements, and contributions of Black communities, while also creating space for honest reflection on the inequalities and barriers that continue to exist. It is a time to learn, listen and act together.
A Personal and Professional Commitment
For me, this month is deeply connected to my personal and professional commitment to creating services and workplaces where everyone feels respected, valued, and able to thrive.
I am passionate about ensuring that the voices, experiences and perspectives of black children, families, colleagues, and communities are not only heard, but actively shape the way we think, lead, and deliver services.
Embedding Anti-Racist Practice
I am proud to co-chair the Essex Anti-Racist Practice Steering Board, where colleagues, partners and leaders work together to drive meaningful change.
Our ambition is not simply to talk about anti-racism, but to embed anti-racist practice into the culture, systems and everyday interactions that shape the experiences of children, young people, families, and our workforce, from the Global Majority.
This is ongoing work, and work that requires courage, curiosity, humility, and collective responsibility.
Learning and Leadership Across the Eastern Region
Across the Eastern Region, I have the privilege of chairing a number of forums that bring together leaders, practitioners and partners who are committed to learning from one another and strengthening our practice.
What continually inspires me is the willingness of people to engage openly, challenge constructively and work together towards greater equity and inclusion.
Anti-Racist Practice is Everyone’s Business
I firmly believe that anti-racist practice is everyone’s business.
Whether we are social workers, managers, administrators, educators, or strategic leaders, we all have a role to play in creating environments where people feel a sense of belonging and where ethnic and racial diversity is recognised as one of our greatest strengths.
Taking Action This Black History Month
This Black History month, I encourage colleagues to take part in the fantastic range of Black History Month events being offered across our region.
Use these opportunities to listen to new perspectives, celebrate achievements, deepen your understanding, and connect with others. Most importantly, use them as a catalyst for continued action beyond October.
Looking Ahead Together
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this year’s programme and to those who continue to champion equality, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racist practice every day.
Together, we can create workplaces, communities, and services where everyone feels seen, valued and respected, and where every child, family and colleague has the opportunity to flourish.
